Spanish companies hit by 'massive' ransomware cyber attack

The ransomware encrypts data on the computer using an encryption key only the attacker knows. Some staff computers at the firms were affected, but service and network operations were not, the energy ministry said. Spain said the attacks were carried out with a version of WannaCry ransomware, which targets the Microsoft's Windows operating system. The virus is usually covertly installed on to computers by hiding within innocent-looking emails containing links, which users are tricked into opening.
