In New Orleans, the Confederate monuments now all but gone

The removal of the statues has happened pretty quickly. As they had been in all of the previous removals, workers wore bulletproof vests, long sleeves to disguise their skin color and face coverings to shield their identity. The Lee monument was dedicated in 1884 on the birthday of the first USA president, George Washington. Lee commanded Confederate armies against the United States in the Civil War and is a revered figure among supporters of the old South. Lire la suite »

Iran extends polling hours due to huge turnout of voters

Polls are now expected to close at 10 p.m. Suspicions that the Guards and the Basij militia under their control falsified voting results in favour of hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad led to eight months of nationwide protests in 2009. Lighthizer cited a lack of modernity in light of more recent digital trade developments as the reason for renegotiation. Many chapters are outdated and do not reflect modern standards. While both sides concede Nafta needs updating, the congressional Republicans most likely to support a final deal would rather see a tweaking, since a significant overhaul or major new provisions could end up eroding the benefits companies and farmers get from reliable, duty-free exports to Canadian and Mexican ... James Comey to testify before Senate in public hearing

Presumably, the pressure was lifted because Trump had just fired the "crazy" Comey, who he also allegedly described as a "real nut job".
