Aid groups say dozens of people died in the attack on Douma earlier this month.

Russian currency and stock markets, preoccupied with the threat of U.S. military action in Syria and the fallout from the new U.S. sanctions, did not react to the draft legislation.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she supported the military action.

French Minister for the Armed Forces Florence Parly said all French aircraft had returned safely from their mission.

Friday's strikes appear to signal Trump's willingness to draw the United States more deeply into the Syrian conflict.

“It was palpable, the fear, ” said Vladimir Frolov, an independent foreign-policy analyst in Moscow. He criticized the U.S. and its allies for launching the strike without waiting for inspectors from the international chemical weapons watchdog to visit the area. But the damage was limited, and a defiant Assad returned to episodic use of chlorine and perhaps other chemicals.

He also criticised the US for "insulting" Putin, an apparent reference to Trump calling out his counterpart for his support of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad. "You could tell straight away that this wasn't your average Damascus night-time battle".

Syrian TV called the attacks a "blatant violation of international law and shows contempt for international legitimacy". A U.S. -led coalition has been conducting airstrikes in Syria since September 2014 as part of a largely successful effort to break the IS grip on both Syria and Iraq. "History will put everything in its place, and it has already laid heavy responsibility on Washington for bloody reprisals against Yugoslavia, Iraq and Libya".

Syria deployed Soviet-made surface-to-air missile systems, including S-125 (NATO reporting name: SA-3 Goa), S-200 (SA-5 Gammon), 2K12 Kub (SA-6 Gainful) and Buk, it said.

Proof of this came on April 9, when the results of the latest set of U.S. sanctions, announced on April 6, started to be felt in Russia. A second witness said the Barzah district of Damascus had been hit in the strikes. Those bases come under the protection of Russian air defense units.

The regime has reached a point of no return. "This was not about interfering in a civil war".

The United States didn't waste any time in disputing Russia's accusations. That cautious response may dent the Russian leader's tough-man image but it won't undermine his gains in Syria or erode his authority at home.

Buses carrying Jaish al-Islam fighters and their families from their former rebel bastion of Douma, arrive at the Abu al-Zindeen checkpoint controlled by Turkish-backed rebel fighters near the northern Syrian town of al-Bab, on Apr. 12, 2018. The US didn't give Russia early notice of the targets but used a hotline to ensure the airspace was clear.

Russia's Col. Gen. Sergei Rudskoi during a briefing in the Russian Defense Ministry in Moscow, Russia, Saturday, April 14.

An Israeli official told CNN that the strikes enforced the red line drawn by President Trump last year.

However, Iran - another key ally of the Assad government - condemned the strikes. Boeing said it is studying the possible impact of the "anti-American" legislation proposal on its business.
