US says Syria government was behind chemical weapon attack

President Donald Trump warned that missiles 'will be coming' in response to an alleged gas attack by government forces on the town of Douma.

And he says solving the problem in Syria is much more difficult because partisan sniping over Russia is hampering the U.S. ability to find common diplomatic ground with Moscow.

"They agreed it was vital that the use of chemical weapons did not go unchallenged, and on the need to deter the further use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime", the prime minister's office said in a statement reported by Reuters.

The foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, withdrew from a press conference in Oxford with his German counterpart, Heiko Maas, to attend the emergency cabinet, instead meeting him briefly at Heathrow. "There is no reason for this".

He evoked chemical weapons attacks in World War I and said, "today the nations of Britain, France and the United States of America have marshaled their righteous power" against what he called barbarism. Thus a withdrawal of U.S. troops would bring neither accountability for Assad nor an end to the horrors.
