Cantona was taken to United from Leeds in 1992 and played a key role in the success of the team under Sir Alex Ferguson before retiring in 1997, while Van Persie joined from Arsenal in 2012 and won a league title in his first season at the club.

Reports in Italy and England suggest United are ready to hijack any Manchester City move for Sanchez.

"I don't question his passion".

Within days of that meeting, however, he had signed for Paris Saint-Germain, leaving City standing at the altar.

Asked whether Arsenal would encourage a bidding war between the Manchester clubs, Wenger added: "It is always beneficial to the club who can take advantage". United's interest, genuine or otherwise, is not said to have caused any panic.
