Environment Canada says snow in the forecast for Vancouver Island

18 Décembre 2017

Winter weather is on the way for inland and eastern Vancouver Island, the Southern Gulf Islands and Greater Victoria, according to a special weather statement issued by Environment Canada.

A Pacific low pressure system will move into Montana on Tuesday afternoon, bringing snow to much of southern Alberta, though there is still some uncertainty about the expected path and speed of the low.

Snowfall is supposed to be heaviest in the Fraser Valley, Fraser Canyon, Similkameen and Nicola regions, the weather agency forecasts.

East Vancouver Island and Victoria are expected to get more of the white stuff.

Those living in the area or driving through are warned that weather in the mountains can change suddenly, and to be prepared for deteriorating travel conditions. Snowfall amounts will vary significantly from region to region and especially with elevation. Higher elevation passes like the Malahat and the Hump should see significant accumulations with at least 5 to 10 cm of snow expected.

On the mainland, about five centimetres could accumulate in higher urban communities, while Howe Sound and Whistler should see about 10 centimetres of snow.

In the Boundary, Environment Canada expects that snow fall will be the greatest along Highway 3 and in the City of Grand Forks.

The weather will become more wintery over the south coast this week.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement early Monday calling for snow at the higher levels of Metro Vancouver on Tuesday, with more flurries possible on Thursday.
