Apple confirms deal to buy music discovery app Shazam

14 Décembre 2017

For instance, Apple Music and iTunes Match now use Gracenote MusicID to match song files in users' iTunes libraries to copies on Apple's servers, a slightly different fingerprinting technology from that of Shazam.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but reports estimated the acquisition to be valued at around $400 million. The company was founded in 1999, and started as a text-based service in 2002.

Apple Inc. issued a statement describing Shazam as "natural fit" with its services. "Since the launch of the App Store, Shazam has consistently ranked as one of the most popular apps for iOS".

Over the years the novelty of Shazam's technology became less impressive and more easily copied. Over the years, as technology has advanced, the software that runs Shazam is no longer considered cutting edge, and the tech itself is now easily replicable.

After all, Shazam has been around since apps were but a twinkle in Steve Jobs's eye.

As a tech behemoth, Apple aims to be a similarly omnipresent utility in its customers' lives.

Donald Trump Jr. asks House Intel Committee to investigate leaks
Capitol Hill media witnessed Donald Trump Jr.'s arrival at a Senate office building at roughly 10 a.m. Mark Warner, has said he wants Trump return for a public hearing.

Leaving aside the very real possibility that Apple splashed out purely to create the portmanteau name ShazApple, music discovery may still be at its core. In hindsight, the acquisition was a long time coming: Shazam has been integrated with Siri since 2014, and Apple takes pride in the power of its TV commercials to boost sales for artists from Matt Costa to Marian Hill, a phenomenon that would be almost impossible without Shazam.

More updates to come from both Apple and YouTube.

'We have exciting plans in store, and we look forward to combining with Shazam upon approval of today´s agreement'.

Apple confirmed on Monday that it's acquiring Shazam, a UK-based music recognition app.

"We are thrilled that Shazam and its talented team will be joining Apple", said Apple. The company had in the past integrated Shazam service into its Siri digital assistance service enabling Siri to identify music for iPhone users. Spotify, which pays Shazam a referral fee every time a listener is directed from Shazam to the Spotify app, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. "If you're Apple, your priority is not just in the device and hardware business, but also increasingly in the original content business". Ever since the launch of iTunes in 2001, the company has invested heavily in remaining relevant in the fast-changing music business. It would then connect users to a service that allowed them to buy or stream the song they were looking for. At its heart, Shazam has experience and assets in a few key areas: Music recognition, specifically algorithms to match snippets of songs; Video recognition, since Shazam can also match clips of TV shows and movies; A considerable and well-indexed database of media to match snippets to; And an incredibly popular app that sends millions of customers a month to streaming services.
