U.S. flu season off to an early start; widespread in 7 states

The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) is reporting the first influenza-related death in Indiana of the 2017-2018 flu season.

Clay Van Houten, of the state Health Department, says it's likely that the flu season peak is still a ways off, so it's not too late to get a flu shot.

This year's flu season is off to a quick start and so far it seems to be dominated by a nasty bug.

By the end of last week, seven states reported widespread flu activity including Kansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Virginia.

Those numbers are above the five-year average for December and higher than last year, which saw 19 flu-related hospitalizations during the same week and 83 hospitalizations overall for the period.

The CDC says most flu seasons don't really get going until around Christmas.
