At least 25 wounded in Israeli retaliation strikes in Gaza

09 Décembre 2017

The Palestinian Health Ministry says a 30-year-old Gazan was killed and dozens more were wounded in skirmishes between Israeli forces and protesters along Gaza's border with Israel.

Hamas has called for a new Palestinian uprising like the "intifadas" of 1987-1993 and 2000-2005, which together saw thousands of Palestinians and more than 1,000 Israelis killed.

More than 300 people were injured across the West Bank, Gaza and Jerusalem on Friday, 50 of whom needed hospital treatment, the Palestinian Authority's Ministry of Health said.

Large demonstrations also took place in Jordan, Tunisia, Somalia, Yemen, Malaysia and Indonesia, and hundreds protested outside the USA embassy in Berlin.

As per local media reports, 400,000 plus protestors filled the streets in Gaza today, as Hamas reportedly fired two rockets at Israeli settlements.

The Iron Dome anti-missile defense system intercepted a rocket headed straight for a populated area in the Gaza Belt region in southern Israel on Friday night after terrorists launched another attack against civilians across the border.

The Israeli military said it had responded to rocket fire by striking four facilities belonging to Hamas in the Gaza Strip: two weapons manufacturing sites, a weapons warehouse, and a military compound.

In one of them, a rocket hit the southern Israeli city of Sderot although Israeli public radio said it did not explode and did not cause any casualties.

In response, United States ambassador Nikki Haley said Washington is more committed to peace "than we've ever been before - and we believe we might be closer to that goal than ever before".

A previously unknown Salafist group calling itself the Salahedin Brigades claimed responsibility for the first attempted attack.

Trump's decision drew lavish praise from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu but has sparked a worldwide diplomatic backlash.

As Friday prayers ended at the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, worshippers made their way toward the walled Old City gates, chanting "Jerusalem is ours, Jerusalem is our capital" and "We don't need empty words, we need stones and Kalashnikovs".

The meeting was requested by eight of the 15 members of the council but was largely symbolic as no vote on a resolution was planned because the USA wields veto power.

But Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas appeared defiant.

US President Donald Trump's declaration on Jerusalem departed from decades of US policy and upended long-standing global assurances that the fate of the city would be determined in negotiations.
