Uterus transplant took over a year to prove successful, doctors say

As of previous year, the Swedish doctor who was the first in the world to deliver a baby as a result of a womb transplant had delivered five babies from women with such transplants, the AP reported.

A womb transplant program at Baylor has been under way since previous year, and surgeons there have completed eight in a medical trial of 10 transplants, according to Time. "It was a very exciting birth".

This is the first baby to result from the transplants, occurring after one of the four confirmed operations; three other transplants reportedly failed.

Baylor has had a study underway for several years to enroll up to 10 women for uterus transplants.

The first attempted uterus transplant in the United States in February 2016 at the Cleveland Clinic in OH, from a deceased donor, failed because of a yeast infection.

That means the patient doesn't have to spend a lifetime taking powerful drugs that suppress her immune system, which would put her at risk for unsafe long-term complications.

"Dr. Giuliano Testa, the principal investigator of the uterine transplant clinical trial at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, said the recent birth is, "...a milestone in our work to solve absolute uterine factor infertility; but, more importantly, a lovely moment of love and hope for a mother who had been told she would never be able to carry her own child".

But according to Tech Times, the donor uterus came from Taylor Siler, a Dallas nurse who has two children.

It took months to ensure that the transplanted uterus would be functional and then many more to determine if the implanted embryo would prove viable, Dr. Tiffany Anthony said.

Baylor officials said Monday that eight transplants have been performed and that one of those women now is pregnant as a result. The ones done in Sweden were from live donors, mostly from the recipients' mother or a sister.

While the birth of a healthy baby by a woman with a transplanted uterus was a medical first in the United States, it follows several childbirths by women with transplanted uteruses at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg in Sweden, said Civale. "This is not the same thing".
