McCown still may very well be just that.
Both the Jets and McCown have left open the possibility he returns to NY next season.
"I've been saying that", said Bowles, when asked the lingering question.
"It's always good [to hear that], but that was my plan and my expectation", he said following practice Wednesday in Florham Park.
McCown has thrown for over 100 yards in eight games this season, which ties his career high. Three years later, that's still the case. Hackenberg is the great unknown. "It's a one-game-at-a-time mentality, but I have a ton of respect for the guys that have played and started for a long time in consecutive games, whether it's (Brett) Favre, or Tom (Brady) or Peyton and Eli (Manning), all those guys. I got faith that I just keep my head to the grindstone and keep working hard, things will work out".
Tossing a career-high 18 touchdown passes is also quite the accomplishment.
With those two running scores, McCown now has a career-high five rushing touchdowns on the year and leads all quarterbacks in that category. Thorpe was 38 when he accomplished it for the Canton Bulldogs in 1926, while Flutie was 41 with the Chargers in 2003.
"Patience is the key", McCown said.
Bowles has no choice but to continue playing him.
"I watch [Petty and Hackenberg] work every day".
Engine issue forces Air NZ changes
A company spokesperson said the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner had returned as a precaution due to "a possible engineering issue". An investigation is underway after two Air New Zealand 787 aircraft experienced engine abnormalities in recent days.
His performance against the Chiefs also earned him AFC offensive player of the week honors for the third time in his career.
McCown's five touchdown runs tie him for first among National Football League quarterbacks.
"He's 38, but he looks like he's 26 out there", wide receiver Jermaine Kearse said. But he's having the best season of his career for the Jets.
Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins could be a free agent this year.
Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg are the youngsters on the depth chart below McCown, and neither was able to surpass the veteran over the summer despite playing the majority of the preseason snaps.
And yet entering Week 14, the Jets remain mathematically in playoff contention.
"I'm young and I'm going to get my shot". I just need to keep working and keep developing those things that I need to develop and be as prepared as I can when that opportunity does come. "As productive as he's been, you want to see that".
But the Jets are likely to go after a quarterback in the draft, hoping to find a player who can be a leader moving forward.
And, McCown might be the flawless complement to whomever is drafted even if that means moving from the huddle to the sideline next season.
"I think every guy in this locker room, when your number's called, you play until your opportunity is gone", McCown said.
