05 Décembre 2017

Georgia junior Roquan Smith has become the first Bulldog to win the Butkus Award, given to the nation's best collegiate linebacker.

Georgia players named to the all-conference first team were Smith and Isaiah Wynn.

The Montezuma, Ga., native was competing with four other finalists, Michigan's Devin Bush, Virginia Tech's Tremaine Edwards, Wisconsin's T.J. Edwards and Clemson's Dorian O'Daniel, but ultimately took home the award.

Smith was scheduled on Monday evening to be in Charlotte, where he was a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Award for nation's top defensive player.

Smith leads the Dawgs with 113 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and has two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.

The Bulldogs also landed a handful of players on the AP's All-SEC first and second teams. With the help from Butkus Award semifinalist Lorenzo Carter, Georgia ranks second nationally in Passing Yards Allowed (158.3 yards/game), third in Scoring Defense (13.8 points/game) and fourth in Total Defense (270.9 yards/game). Voting is done by a selection committee of 51 football coaches, recruiters, talent scouts and journalists.

Georgia's Kirby Smart got the nod as coach of the year after leading his team to the College Football Playoff in just his second season between the hedges. The 2017 pro victor will be announced after the National Football League season, succeeding 2016 victor Khalil Mack of the Oakland Raiders.
