Trump Says Asia Trip Showed Strong US Standing

President Trump also said that he would re-negotiate the "disastrous" US-Korea trade pact, announced deals with Seoul that would bring billions of dollars of investment into the country and had "very candid" conversations with China's President Xi about North Koreaand about reducing Beijing's trade deficit with the US.

"Time is running out" in dealing with North Korea, Trump said at the White House.

"Everywhere we went, our foreign hosts greeted the American delegation and myself included with incredible warmth and hospitality and most importantly respect", President Trump told reporters at the White House in his 1st public comments after arriving back in the United States late Tuesday.

Trump also said the USA and China agree that a "freeze-for-freeze" agreement with North Korea is not acceptable.

His remarks represented a sort of victory lap, as he ticked off what he described as his successes on the trip and took aim at what he called the failures and naivete of predecessors in protecting American jobs, trade and security.

"Everywhere we went, our foreign hosts greeted the American delegation, myself included, with incredible warmth, hospitality, and most importantly respect". A late June worldwide survey from the Pew Research Center found only 49 percent of respondents from 37 countries viewed the USA favorably at the start of the Trump administration, compared with 64 percent who viewed the US favorably at the end of the Obama administration.

The president arrived in Washington late Tuesday after a almost two-week trip to Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines.

"What regional countries wanted was for him to simply show up - to underscore that America remained at least notionally committed to Asia", said Shahriman Lockman, a senior analyst at the Institute of Strategic & International Studies in Malaysia. "But we will never run from it", Trump said.

For Asian leaders, Mr Trump's off-the-cuff style, freewheeling tweets, and rhetorical hyperbole, must have been daunting. Japan will also shoulder more of the economic expense of defending its region, Trump said. But one thing they seemed to learn was that he responds well to a lavish reception. They argue that the president's use of childish names for Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader, has deepened the possibility of a nuclear crisis, not reduced tensions.

Mr Trump's pronouncements on North Korea during the trip swung from embracing diplomacy to warnings of military intervention.

And then he tacked back toward diplomacy.

Noting that the United States has a foreign trade deficit of almost $800-M, President Trump said that was "unacceptable". "Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend - and maybe someday that will happen!"

"Short and fat is not a nuclear strategy", he said, adding that Washington's approach to North Korea was fed by "whim, ego, and theatrical calculations of a fickle and uninformed president".
