Consumer Reports' rankings of auto reliability

20 Octobre 2017

These are the brand rankings and the number of spots each brand rose or fell from a year ago. General Motors Co's GM.N Cadillac brand was last among 27 brands ranked. Acura fell the furthest, hurt by problems with the transmissions on several of its new models.

While the Tesla Model S earned an "above average" reliability for the first time, Consumer Reports is predicting the upcoming Tesla Model 3 will have only an "average" reliability score. Problems often arise when new technologies are added to today's cars.

In conjunction with newer 8-speed and 9-speed transmissions, as well as CVTs, arriving in market, CR says it is seeing complaints of bad shifts or transmissions breaking down. At the bottom of the list is the Hyundai Tucson. But Tesla's beef with Consumer Reports goes well beyond this Model 3 prediction.

For the fifth year in a row, Toyota has topped Consumer Reports' reliability rankings - partly because it has been conservative about implementing new technology.

"They've had all those growing pains", Fisher said.

"Electric vehicles are inherently less complicated than gasoline or hybrid alternatives", Fisher said.

This upward momentum "shows promise" for the Model 3's predicted reliability rating, giving them "more confidence in the Tesla Model 3".

Other brands seeing improvement from past year include Kia, BMW, Subaru, Infiniti and Honda. Drivers of first-year models had twice as many complaints about in-car electronics.

United Kingdom fintech investment a bright spot amid Brexit gloom
Along with investment in China expected to hit new highs, it puts fintech investment globally on track for a record year. The capital has been the major victor from investment, receiving around 90 per cent of all venture capital investment.

You might have been forgiven for thinking that the Model 3 was the only vehicle that CR published a reliability score on, since it was one of the only ones mentioned in a press release issued by the company Thursday afternoon.

The Bolt is the most reliable auto in General Motors Co's GM.N Chevrolet brand, he said.

Fisher says the XC90's infotainment screen, per survey respondents, had a tendency to lock up, which can block access to safety features of the vehicle. "We are saying it is basically par for the course".

Based on that analysis, these models are the least reliable. A stark example is the 2017 Subaru Impreza.

The magazine's consumer surveys have given the Model X lower marks because of the complexity of controls for front seats and infotainment systems, but this was unrelated to the car's driving characteristics.

Models improving included the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Ford F-150 and Ram 1500.

On the one hand, all auto models tend to have more problems with reliability on early VINs than late VINs, and Tesla is no exception to this.
