Local chapter reacts to Boy Scouts accepting girls

13 Octobre 2017

Local chapters will have the discretion to create the girls-only cub scout dens based on demand.

Denise Ebersealer, the Director of Development and Communications for Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay, said they want to maintain as many girls in their program as they can.

The Boy Scouts' official announcement of their new plan made no mention of the Girl Scouts, although BSA board Chairman Randall Stephenson said girls should have the chance to benefit from his organization's "outstanding leadership development programs".

"The Boy Scouts of America conducted some research and about a year ago it seemed like they would fast-track this notion of allowing girls to join", Farrer said.

Sing Oldham, spokesman for the Southern Baptist Convention, said the announcement continued a "reinvention" of the Boy Scouts his group does not support, including the decision in 2013 to allow openly gay members. "Boy Scouts doesn't necessarily have the expertise, or frankly, the interest in developing girls' potential".

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has lost about a third of its members since 2000, which now stands at 2.3 million. Jones feels the decision will allow girls to move through rankings they've never had and gain new experiences.

Eberspeaker said they offer numerous same programs as Boy Scouts do.

The Boy Scouts of America will start admitting girls as Cub Scouts next year and then open up a program for older girls in 2019. The Wednesday Boy Scouts of America announcement to admit girls throughout its ranks will transform what has been a mostly cordial relationship between the two iconic youth groups since the Girl Scouts of the U.S. was founded in 1912, two years after the Boy Scouts. Or do "boys need time to be boys and girls need time to be girls"? I think the Boy Scout program is unique among the youth programs. Girl Scouts provides a safe and inclusive environment that has been proven over the years, she said. Both organizations have also faced competition from conservative Christian youth groups, including American Heritage Girls and Trail Life USA.

Rather than altering its message, Margosian said, the Girl Scouts will "double down" with a commitment to empowering girls.

"Girl Scouts works. We're committed to preparing the next generation of women leaders, and we're here to stay".

-The Girl Scouts say that girls particularly need all-female organizations to really thrive and flourish. Cub Scout packs can include any combination of all boy or all girl dens.

"I formally request that your organization stay focused on serving the 90 percent of American boys not now participating in Boy Scouts ... and not consider expanding to recruit girls", wrote GSUSA President Kathy Hopinkah Hannan in a letter to the BSA's president, AT&T Chairman Randall Stephenson.

When it comes to programming, she said, "You can't just have girls be an afterthought". The Girl Scouts have turned away from the outdoor adventures that my daughter wanted.
