IIO deployed to fatal officer-involved shooting in Qualicum Beach

Police have set up a white tent on Highway 19 southwest of Qualicum Bay.

RCMP say officers were called to the side of a highway near Qualicum Beach on Thursday morning after receiving reports about a man who had stabbed himself inside a vehicle.

Officers were also notified by 911 callers that the man was running down the highway and someone was trying to restrain him.

Police remained at the scene and cordoned off the area just before the Corcan Road overpass.

When they arrived, a struggle ensued and at least one shot was sacked by police, according to the the release.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C.is mandated to conduct investigations into officer-related incidents of death or serious harm in order to determine whether or not an officer may have committed an offence.

Paramedics provided medical assistance but the man was since died from his injuries, the agency said.
