David Padgett hires his ex-head coach Trent Johnson as assistant

Padgett's ties with Johnson go back to when he played high school basketball in Nevada with Johnson's son while He was the head coach at the University of Nevada.

Interim basketball coach David Padgett announced Trent Johnson as assistant coach October 10.

"Coach Johnson is highly experienced", said UofL Acting Head Coach David Padgett. "I've known coach a long, long time, but nothing surprises me because his maturity when he was 18 and I was 30 was so impressive". "He's going to be great for me to lean on from an experience standpoint, a basketball coaching standpoint and he's going to be absolutely incredible for our guys". Johnson was previously the head coach of Nevada, Stanford, LSU and TCU.

Johnson said he expects to help Padgett through a whirlwind transition of leading one of the nation's elite programs. "He is going to bring a wealth of knowledge to our program" Padgett said in a press conference. He's someone that I will be able to lean on and our players will be able to relate well to him.

Johnson comes to U of L during a tumultuous period for the program, which has suspended head coach Rick Pitino and two assistants in the midst of a federal bribery investigation involving recruits. "I think under the circumstances, I don't think that we could find a better hire".

Johnson steps into the role vacated by Padgett.
