Trump says wants to reduce USA trade deficit with Thailand

04 Octobre 2017

"They should publicly reaffirm that USA law bars direct military assistance to Thailand and outline key benchmarks Thailand needs to meet to restore the bilateral relationship to its prior condition".

Trump and first lady Melania Trump greeted Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha and his wife at the White House south portico Monday. During a joint appearance, Trump said the USA and Thailand have been "negotiating very long and hard, and we're meeting with our representatives in a little while to go further" on trade.

"I think we are going to try and sell a little bit more to you now, make that a little bit better if that's possible", Trump said.

The meeting was a sign of improved ties between the USA and Thailand after the relationship cooled when the Thai military took power in a 2014 coup.

Human rights groups have opposed the visit of Prayuth. "If we weren't good, they probably wouldn't invite us", he said.

The holiday is also on a Monday (as opposed to Sunday last year), giving consumers an extra weekend day for shopping. The tally includes online, kiosk and direct-to-consumer sales, but excludes gasoline and restaurants.

"President Trump should maintain a balance in USA policy and avoid appearing to wholeheartedly approve of repressive military rule", she adds.

Thailand will work closely to further strengthen the cooperation between the two countries, said Prayut. Musharraf first visited the White House in 2002, three years after he seized power from an elected leader and before he'd rammed through a national referendum to endorse his presidency. She reportedly fled Thailand in August ahead of a verdict in her negligence trial.

After the coup, the United States under President Barack Obama stopped military assistance and training programs - a largely symbolic step but one that went down badly with Bangkok, a USA treaty ally that has moved closer to China as relations with Washington have strained. In April, Trump met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, who took power in a coup in 2013, and a month later hosted Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who survived a coup in 2015 and has since supervised a crackdown on dissent.

The statement said President Trump welcomed the commitment to the roadmap, which upon implementation of relevant organic laws as stipulated in the Constitution, would lead to free and fair elections in 2018.
