Ex-Verizon lawyer Ajit Pai confirmed to second term as FCC chair

03 Octobre 2017

In April, Pai proposed overturning the 2015 net neutrality rules, with a final vote expected later this year.

Ajit Pai has been confirmed by the Senate as the Chairman of the FCC in a 52-41 vote.

Capito and Pai have twice toured West Virginia together to better understand the difficulties of internet access in rural areas of the state.

I am deeply grateful to the U.S. Senate for confirming my nomination to serve a second term at the FCC and to President Trump for submitting that nomination to the Senate.

If you were hoping that the Senate would have second thoughts about FCC Chairman Ajit Pai's tenure given widespread objections to his policies, you're about to be disappointed. "Since January, the commission has focused on bridging the digital divide, promoting innovation, protecting consumers and public safety, and making the FCC more open and transparent".

Among those offering congratulations was NAB President Gordon Smith: "Chairman Pai understands broadcasting's unique role as an indispensable communications medium, and we appreciate his effort to ease outdated regulatory burdens on local radio and TV. In the months and years ahead, I look forward to continuing our work to advance a pro-growth, less regulatory communications environment that best serves the consumer". Pai's first term on the FCC technically expired in June 2016, but the FCC's rules allowed him to stay until the end of 2017 regardless of the status of his re-nomination. Warren said, when Trump nominated Pai, "Sinclair got exactly what it wanted".

They need to get round the table and secure a negotiated outcome to this dispute quickly", Brokenshire said. Mr Brokenshire said he was "deeply disappointed" by the determination.

"Chairman Pai has already made much-needed reforms to improve the processes at the FCC and empower his fellow commissioners", Sen.

"Frontier Communications congratulates Chairman Pai on his Senate confirmation and new term leading the FCC", said Mark Nielsen, EVP and general counsel for Frontier Communications.

Democrats have criticized Pai, a Republican, for cutting back FCC regulations, including in regards to net neutrality, the belief internet users should have equal access to all legal content and internet service providers should not charge more for certain services to be accessed.

Pai is "an exemplary FCC Chairman who will fight for unserved and underserved Americans", Sen. "Mr. Pai has overseen the adoption of Mobility Fund Phase II rules supporting universal service".

"Chairman Pai has demonstrated his commitment to the agency and fidelity to the law", Verizon Senior VP Will Johnson said in a statement last week.
