CFL won't approve Manziel deal for '17

27 Septembre 2017

Former NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel is not eligible to sign a contract for the 2017 season in the Canadian Football League, according to an official statement released by the CFL. The CFL has extended the stay on the expiry of the 10-day window for Mr. Manziel until November 30, 2017 and therefore Mr. Manziel will remain on Hamilton's negotiation list until that date. But the Ti-Cats never removed Manziel from their negotiation list or traded his rights to another team, and the CFL earlier this month extended the team's window to sign the former Heisman Trophy victor and first-round draft pick of the Browns. "However, Mr. Manziel will be eligible to sign a contract for the 2018 season and, if Mr. Manziel meets certain conditions that have been spelled out by the Commissioner, the CFL will register that contract". "The specifics of those conditions are confidential and will not be disclosed".

By pushing the window back again to November 30, Hamilton will have a chance to negotiate a contract with Manziel for 2018 following the conclusion of the 2017 campaign.

The Cleveland Browns selected Manziel with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2014 National Football League draft after his standout collegiate career at Texas A&M that included a Heisman Trophy.

However, due to off-the-field issues, Manziel's career was never able to get off of the ground.

He played in 15 games during his short two-year National Football League stint, starting eight of them. He threw for 7,820 yards, ran for 2,169 yards, and accounted for 93 TDs with A&M from 2012-2013.
