Catriona Matthew to lead Europe in Solheim Cup on home soil

Scottish veteran Catriona Matthew said it was a "dream come true" being named captain of the Europe team for the 2019 Solheim Cup which will be held on the renowned Gleneagles course in Scotland.

She replaced the injured Suzann Pettersen, winning three points from four matches in Europe's 16½-11½ loss.

The event will take place September 13-15 on the PGA Centenary Course in Perthshire, Scotland.

"It's always such an incredible atmosphere and over the years that I've played, I've enjoyed it more and more".

Matthew takes over as captain from Sweden's Annika Sorenstam, having previously served as a vice-captain.

"She helped us a lot over the past year as a vice-captain, but then stepped in and won us three points as a player", said Sorenstam, who was Matthew's first Solheim Cup partner in 1998.

"Cationa is very well respected by the players", said Sorenstam, "so she is a natural choice".

Matthew, 48, is one of the best European Solheim Cup players ever, ranking third in European victories by an individual.

The initial concern for her captaincy is the uncertain future of the Ladies European Tour, which has been struggling to maintain a sustainable schedule.
