Heavy rain claims another life in Kerala, landslides reported, alert sounded

One person was killed after a tree came crashing down on him due to heavy rains in Thondimala of Idukki district. In this south west monsoon season from June 1 to Sept 18, Kerala has received 1746.8 mm actual rains as against the normal 1925.3 mm with a departure of 9.27 percent.

"The rains in southern Kerala has subsided and northern Kerala may get heavy rains sporadically".

Local weather office said heavy rainfall (7-11cm in 24 hrs) is most likely to continue at one or two places in Kerala till tomorrow morning. "Then for the next few days it will be isolated rains in parts of the state while intensity of the rains will shift towards Mumbai", S Sudevan, director of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) here told TOI.

As per official estimates, two people lost their lives in separate rain-related incidents, 37 houses have been destroyed and 542 damaged over the last two days when heavy rains lashed most parts of Kerala. Strong winds from the westerly direction, speed occasionally reaching 45-55 kmph, are also likely off the Kerala coast and Lakshadweep till Tuesday noon.
