Injury risk for kids sliding down with their parents

16 Septembre 2017

It may seem like the safer choice, but researchers say young children who go down a playground slide on a parent's lap are at risk of a broken leg or other injuries.

The clinical professor and emergency children's doctor added: 'In most cases I have seen, the parents had no idea that doing so could possibly give their child such a significant injury.

An estimated 352,698 children under the age of six were injured on slides in the United States from 2002 to 2015, and many of those injuries were leg fractures, according to the study.

The researchers studied children under six years of age and found that toddlers aged between 12 and 23 months had the most injuries.

In the majority of cases, this type of fractures happens when the child's foot catches the edge or bottom of the slide, then twists and bends backward while sitting on a parent's lap. "They often say they would never have done it had they known", he added in a news release from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Few studies have examined the mechanisms and injuries associated with slide-related injuries in the preschool child. However this figure leaped to 94 percent for leg injuries in children whose medical records showed they were sitting on someone's lap, with shinbone injuries particularly high.

The younger the child, the greater the chances they were on someone's lap when they were injured.

The reason? Parents sliding down with kids in their laps.

The size and weight of adults apparently plays a big role in the potential for injury. The goal of this study was to better understand the factors associated with slide-related injuries in young children.

In a statement on the findings, RoSPA said: 'A new system for collecting data will be rolled out nationally across A&E departments from next month and we're hopeful that this will provide some really useful information about how accidents are happening and the sorts of advice that could help to prevent them'.

As such, the researchers advise that adults do not go down slides with a small child on their lap, and if you do, do so with extreme caution.

The study abstract, "The Mechanisms and Injuries Associated with Playground Slides in Young Children: Increased Risk of Lower Extremity Injuries with Riding on Laps", will be presented Monday, Sept. 18, at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference & Exhibition in Chicago.
