15 Septembre 2017

Illinois' Attorney General says she will not seek another term in office.

"As I look ahead, I believe that the end of my fourth term as Attorney General will be the right time for me to seek a new challenge", the Chicago Democrat said in a statement.

"So strong, in fact, that Lisa Madigan has decided she doesn't want to run a campaign for re-election".

Her father, Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, released a statement today on news of his daughter's decision.

First elected in 2003, AG Madigan became the first Illinois Attorney General in over 25 years to "personally argue a case before the U.S. Supreme Court (Illinois v. Caballes) in which the Court upheld the ability of law enforcement to detect the presence of illegal drugs during traffic stops", according to her biography on the Attorney General's website.

"I still have much work to do on many important issues, and I will continue to give my best to the people of IL and the Office of Attorney General every day through the end of my term in January 2019", her statement reads.

House Speaker Michael Madigan, the attorney general's father, said in a statement "it has been my privilege to watch her fight for the people of IL and do the right thing every day".

"No father could be prouder of his daughter's personal and professional accomplishments, and I look forward to watching her continue her commitment to helping people in a new capacity", he said.

When the attorney general was exploring a gubernatorial run in 2013, the speaker made it clear he would not step down from the post he has now held for 32 of the last 34 years.

Word of an open race for IL attorney general was expected to generate furious scrambling for next year's contest. She will lead the fight against public corruption and bring integrity to the Attorney General's office.

Madigan said she plans to serve out her term, which ends in January 2019.
