The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed Paris and Los Angeles as the Summer Olympics host cities for 2024 and 2028 respectively, through a vote by a show of hands on Wednesday in Lima, Peru.
Los Angeles then dropped its bid for the 2024 Olympics, for which it had been campaigning for over two years, in return for receiving the 2028 edition.
The wait was much longer than Los Angeles, the French city hosted its last Olympics back in 1924.
The IOC decided in July to award both Games at the same time, following the withdrawal of four of the six cities bidding for the 2024 Olympics, amid concerns about the size, cost and complexity of organizing the world's biggest multi-sports event. It will be the first time in 21 years that the Olympics come to the United States.
It will be the third time that Los Angeles hosts the Olympics, with the first two happening in 1932 and 1984.
IOC President Thomas Bach - a driving force behind the decision to confirm 2024 and 2028 at the same time - hailed the joint award as a "win-win-win".
Randy Moss gets inducted into Minnesota Vikings Ring of Honor
Moss wore a purple suit and tie, flanked on a makeshift stage at the center of the field by owners Zygi, Mark, and Leonard Wilf. The former Maryland star hauled in seven passes for 93 yards and found the end zone twice in a 29-19 Minnesota Vikings win.
"Paris said it didn't want to host in 2028".
The Los Angeles Council voted unanimously on August 11 to approve the contracts signed by the city government and the IOC to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2028.
The Olympic body, however, was eager to secure the future of its prime product after Boston, Budapest, Rome and Hamburg all pulled the plug on their 2024 bids mid-race, fearing high costs and local opposition, leaving just Paris and L.A.to battle it out.
The IOC Evaluation Commission confirmed on Monday that the City of Angels is ready to deliver a sustainable, low-risk new Games for a new era, with long-term benefits for LA and the Olympic and Paralympic Movements, said LA 2028 in a press release, reports Xinhua news agency.
"Today I am delighted to invite you to join the great family of Parisians, a family which belongs to the world", said the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo.
"Bringing the Olympics back home to LA gives us the chance to imagine what our city will look like a decade from now", said Eric Garcetti, Mayor of Los Angeles.
