Williamsburg-James City County school district fully accredited

13 Septembre 2017

Locally, 10 divisions are fully accredited: Virginia Beach, Williamsburg-James City County, York County, Gloucester, Isle of Wight, Mathews, Poquoson, Surry, Sussex and Southampton.

School accreditation is based on student's performance on Standards of Learning and other state-approved assessments in English, mathematics, science and history during the 2016-2017 school year.

Across Virginia, 1,573 schools - or 86 percent - earned full accreditation.

High schools must meet the same rates, but they also must end the year with a Graduation Completion Index of more than 85.

"I congratulate the principals, support staff and other educators in these schools for their hard work and dedication to helping students meet the Commonwealth's high expectations for learning and achievement", said Superintendent of Public Instruction Steven R. Staples. Accreditation ratings may also reflect an average of achievement over several years. Each of the county's remaining 15 public schools was fully accredited.

Last year, H.M. Pearson Elementary near Calverton, M.M. Pierce Elementary in Remington and Mary Walter Elementary near Bealeton fell short of full accreditation.

For Madison County, two schools now have been denied accreditation due to reading scores, but the county School Board is appealing that decision. Local schools whose status has not been determined include Nelson County's Tye River Elementary School, Lynchburg's Dearington Elementary School, Heritage Elementary School, Paul Laurence Dunbar Middle School for Innovation, Perrymont Elementary School, and Amherst County's Amelon and Central elementary schools.

The state combines results of tests in each subject area to produce overall passing percentages in English, mathematics, history/social science and science.

If the appeal is granted, the two schools will be considered Partially Accredited: Reconstituted Schools, which means the Madison County School Board will have presented a plan to make improvements and meet standards to the state Board of Education that the state board accepts.
