South Park game changes difficulty level based on skin color

11 Septembre 2017

As implied by the title South Park: The Fractured But Whole, the forthcoming role-playing game from Ubisoft based on the popular animated television show on Comedy Central is more than just a silly pun, as it also serves as a means to reflect the overarching narrative of the title's plot.

Adding to the social commentary are the gender options of the character.

As Eurogamer also reports, Ubisoft developers noted that the game's difficulty setting affects the way other characters speak to you and the amount of money you can make, among other aspects of gameplay.

You're also given three options when choosing your character's gender, which is certainly something the writers will tackle in their own way but it's still a relatively inclusive design decision when it all boils down.

The Fractured But Whole is the funniest game you're going to play this year!

South Park: The Fractured But Whole is a sequel to South Park: The Stick Of Truth, which was partially censored for console versions of the game when released here in New Zealand in 2014. "It's really simple. When you want to talk about your sex, you can start by simply saying I'm a boy or a girl or other". It becomes apparent that as the slider is turned towards a higher difficulty, the darker the player's character skin becomes.

In a scene early in the game, school counsellor Mr Mackey asks the player to pick a gender for the character - either "Male, Female or Other" - despite the same player character being exclusively male in a previous game.

If you play on an easier difficulty your character will be white.

The creators of South Park have never been ones to shy away from "oh s-t" moments of social satire, and their new video game doesn't either. "Can you just hang on a minute?" However, Ubisoft later told GamesRadar that skin tones are just cosmetic and don't actually affect content, so it's unclear exactly how the game takes skin tones into account.

If you do opt for a trans or nonbinary identity, your avatar will be attacked by "rednecks" who yell, "We don't take kindly to your types around here". With an October 17, 2017 release date, the title will be available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
