Phoenix firefighters sent to Georgia to help with Hurricane Irma aftermath

Numerous firefighters and first responders on the task force were on duty at their regular shifts when they got the alert Thursday. They are using the base to set up and prepare for their next mission.

Hurricane Irma is persisting as a "potentially catastrophic" Category 5 storm, packing maximum sustained winds of 185 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center.

According to preliminary numbers, Ohio Task Force 1 traveled more than 3,000 miles and rescued at least 173 people and 40 animals.

NE-TF1 returned home to Lincoln late Tuesday afternoon after spending more than a week in Texas performing rescues and evacuating people from flooded buildings following Hurricane Harvey.

Now, as they travel back to Central Florida with an overnight stop in Tallahassee, they're gearing up to help if Hurricane Irma makes landfall in Florida.

The task force was in Texas for nearly 12 days.

"Even with the personnel that have left Pennsylvania to aid other areas, we are confident that based on current models, we have sufficient resources to meet storm-related needs here within the state", said PEMA Director Richard D. Flinn Jr.

"I think they were at the Virginia-Tennessee border", said Piringer.

Gov. Tom Wolf announced that additional members of PA Task Force One, Urban Search and Rescue Task Force departed Philadelphia on Wednesday, en route to Mobile, Ala. "As exhausted as you are when you get back at home at night, the next thing in the morning you're going to get up and go".

"We can be called to come down there and help at any time", explained Capt. Caimi.
