India eye series whitewash, Dhawan to miss final match

03 Septembre 2017

Barring a 5-0 victory against Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe in 2013, India haven't achieved an ODI series whitewash overseas. "Mr Dhawan's mother is stable and is recovering well at the moment", Amitabh Choudhary was quoted as saying in a BCCI statement. In this India's tour of Sri Lanka, host team hasn't been successful in subjugating any game. Rohit Sharma has broken his poor run in Sri Lanka with two centuries, skipper Virat Kohli has added to his already impressive CV with a century, Jasprit Bumrah has a maiden five-wicket haul in his bag and Manish Pandey has made a strong return to the ODI side.

The fifth and final ODI of the series will be played on Sunday in Colombo. As it stands now, Windies have a shot at qualifying ahead of Sri Lanka, though they'll need to string together a lot of wins to do that.

When will the fifth ODI between India and Sri Lanka be played?

Rahane is the only player who is yet to play a game in the series and was the highest scorer for India in the previous ODI series against West Indies.

This means Ajinkya Rahane, the team's third opener, will finally get a chance to bat in the limited-overs leg of the series.

Lasith Malinga conceded that he will assess his future after the current series against India.

Sri Lanka had chased down India's 322 in the Champions Trophy in June, so a few hoped for a miracle, though this time the team had to go after the mammoth target without Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Perera and Asela Gunaratne.

Sri Lanka have put up 216, 236 for 8, 217 for 9 and 207 in their last four games.

With the 49 not out on Thursday, MS Dhoni's average for 2017 has risen to 91.16, with a strike rate of 85.

The home side did not cross the line then because Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar Kumar came in the way, and since then it has been on the hunt for that elusive victory.

One of the key factors for Sri Lanka has been the failure of highly rated Kusal Mendis.

Former skipper Sunil Gavaskar has questioned the selection process of the Virat Kohli-led Team India stating "it looks like all the nice guys are being left out" and "they should start getting a different hair style and some body art done too to get picked in the team".
