The Punjab and Haryana high court had criticised both the state and central government for allowing crowds to gather outside the court where the Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh rape case was being heard, despite knowing that they might turn violent.
Singh, nicknamed the "guru in bling" for his lavish appearance, was convicted of rape and criminal intimidation of two female followers in a 15-year-old case. The complaint in the cases was filed in 2002. Singh's followers erupted in violence after his conviction Friday, killing 30 people while burning cars, destroying government property, and vandalizing train stations.
While the defence (sect) counsel had argued for minimum punishment for the disgraced sect chief saying that he was a social worker and had health issues, the prosecution side (CBI counsel) sought maximum punishment for the rape convict given his conduct. In rare cases, like the December 2012 gang rape of a medical student that sparked outrage worldwide, death sentences are also handed out.
The court while pronouncing the verdict had said that Gurmeet Ram Rahim had acted like a "wild beast" and didn't even spare his own female disciples. Furthermore, the court has said that the godman should not be given any special treatment in jail. While Ram Rahim's son Jasmeet Singh, daughters Charan Preet and Amar Preet are his legal heirs, his foster daughter Honeypreet is a third member who can stake claim on the properties.
Virk also said: "The Sunaria jail is quite far away from the city and I do not foresee any problem for local people".
