Roger Federer struggles through first round at US Open

31 Août 2017

Roger Federer returns a shot to Frances Tiafoe during their first round match at the US Open.

"It felt like people were happy to see me again", Federer said.

"I was anxious in the beginning from my back issue from a couple weeks ago but I loosened up", Federer said, calling his back "extremely well and adding "it's only going to get better from here".

With the contest going all the way to the fifth set, it was the 19-time Grand Slam champion who eventually emerged victorious, winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.

Third seed Federer was pushed by American teenager Tiafoe on Tuesday, battling to a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 victory on Arthur Ashe. "It was a good one".

Every time the Swiss has won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon in a single season, he has also gone on to lift the US Open trophy (2004, 2006 and 2007). "I felt like I didn't want to let the opportunities go for granted".

"I was quite up and down", Federer said, acknowledging that he was cautious with his footwork and had some trouble seeing the ball properly. I think there's a lot of positives for me to look at, that I can come through a five-setter with the preparation that I had.

The third seed faces Russia's Mikhail Youzhny in the second round. They practiced together at the French Open and U.S. Open last year, and they played each other in the second round of the Miami Open earlier this year.

There were extra eyes on Federer Tuesday night because it was the Swiss's first match since injuring his back at the Canadian Open final. So that would have been tougher for me maybe to back it up back-to-back days.

"I know that I'm strong and I know that I will come back stronger, for sure".

"Instead they have some insane rule and I don't get it".

There are some eyecatching matches to look forward to in the women's draw on Thursday, too, with plenty likely to flock to the Louis Armstrong Stadium to get a look at Ostapenko; the Latvian has established a reputation as one of the most entertaining players on the circuit.

Unbeaten in his two previous 2017 Grand Slam events, Federer wrestled with an iffy serve throughout the first set and appeared distracted by the unsettling noise under the closed Arthur Ashe Stadium roof, unable to get his teeth into the match.

Roger Federer is commonly referred to by the nickname G.O.A.T which (obviously) stands for Greatest of All Time.

The state of Federer's back injury remains a concern for fans, which happened over two weeks ago during the final in Montreal.

His epic win over Rafael Nadal in the final saw him move back into the top 10 and after resting at the French Open, his form at Wimbledon was sensational, cruising to a record-breaking eighth title and record-extending 19th major overall without dropping a set.
