Hurricane Harvey and flooding associated with the storm has had a major impact on the nation's blood supply.

Blood Centers in Houston and surrounding areas have been unable to collect blood since Hurricane Harvey made landfall.

Some of Virginia Blood Services' supply blood has already been sent down to Texas and the organization is on stand by to send more if needed.

All blood types are wanted but the most imperative is O Positive along with platelets.

Blood Assurance is a nonprofit, full-service regional blood center serving 51 counties and more than 75 health care facilities in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina and Virginia. In addition, the task force operates as a mechanism to assess the need for collections and/or transportation of blood should a disaster occur.

The blood center hopes to reach their goal within a few days. Coffee Memorial Blood Center is working with a Dallas-based blood center to help transport the blood to hospitals and patients who need it.

"The Blood Bank is committed to helping our fellow blood banks in Texas until they can resume their operations", Fleary said. "Without blood, not one surgery can begin and many treatments can't be delivered", Botos said. Blood donors must be healthy, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be 17 years old or 16 with written parental consent.

The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks is located in Springdale, and you can access its website to learn about donation times and even get directions.

Walmart deployed their disaster recovery team to the areas in the path of the storm to ensure their employees are safe and their stores are stocked to supply people with essential items. It is likely that the need will continue through the week and I'm confident Ozarks area donors will roll up their sleeves to help.
