Former Expedia CEO takes helm of Uber on Wednesday

30 Août 2017

Since 2005, Khosrowshahi has served as CEO of Expedia, which he helped expand to more than 60 countries.

Khosrowshahi will be at Uber for an all-hands meeting on Wednesday and is expected to take questions from employees.

Spokespeople for Uber and Expedia didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Khosrowshahi will succeed co-founder Travis Kalanick, who grew Uber into a $20-billion annual booking business previous year before scandals forced him out.

The Uber board on Sunday voted to select Khosrowshahi as the company's next leader to replace co-founder Travis Kalanick, who was ousted in June under shareholder pressure, sources told reporters.

After being offered the job on Sunday by the board of the car-hailing company, Khosrowshahi has since been negotiating his contract. Previously, he served as chief financial officer at IAC.

"Uber is a company that is redefining the transportation industry on a global basis; to be part of that story is something that is interesting and would be a real privilege", said Khosrowshahi. But the firm and its board had not spoken publicly on the decision until Tuesday evening Pacific Time, as contract negotiations were ongoing.

Nice. But even more eloquently, he noted: "I have to tell you I am scared".

"I've been here at Expedia for so long that I've forgotten what life is outside of this place". After that, he'll get together with employees around the world in smaller groups over the next few weeks.

Khosrowshahi was raised in Tarrytown, New York, having fled Iran with his family on the eve of the Iranian revolution when he was nine.

While Uber's business continued to grow, Kalanick's management style faced scrutiny and investors mutinied against him.

On Tuesday, Uber said it was cooperating with a preliminary investigation led by the U.S. Department of Justice into possible violations of bribery laws. Benchmark, meanwhile, is seeking that Kalanick is subject to a "status quo" order which would stop him dicking about in Uber's affairs while Kos rights the listing ship.

Khosrowshahi will face challenges including conflicts with regulators and taxi operators, a cut-throat company culture, and board members feuding with investors over Kalanick.

Kalanick welcomed his successor in a statement, saying: "Casting a vote for the next chief executive of Uber was a big moment for me and I couldn't be happier to pass the torch to such an inspiring leader", he said.
