Sushma Swaraj discusses with Qatar welfare of Indians there

27 Août 2017

Earlier Qatari Foreign Minister held talks with Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in New Delhi on Saturday.

Al-Thani called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and handed over a letter from the Emir of Qatar.

"He separately met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval", it stated. Qatar is the workplace for over 600000 Indian workers, mainly blue-collar construction labour.

In June, the four Arab nations had announced cutting diplomatic ties and closing all connectivity links with Qatar, alleging that it supported terrorism. This is an internal matter of GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council). Qatar had rejected the charges.

During the delegation-level talks, Al-Thani also conveyed to the Indian side that his country would continue to supply liquefied natural gas to India to support its energy requirement.

In the midst of this diplomatic standoff, Qatar is wooing the West with big ticket purchases of fighter jets from the USA, naval ships from Italy and Brazilian football superstar Neymar from Barcelona FC for Paris St. Germain, which the Gulf kingdom owns.

On regional issues, Sheikh Mohammed briefed his Indian interlocutors about the situation in the Gulf region.

"He was briefed about India's position that peace and security in the Gulf are of paramount importance for the continued progress and prosperity of the region", the statement said.

India had asked countries in the region to resolve the crisis through constructive dialogue and well-established global principles of mutual respect.
