27 Août 2017

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Moin Qureshi, the country's biggest meat exporter, here on Friday night for allegedly running hawala trade in the country.

Qureshi has been questioned several times in the past by the agency which is probing his role following the registration of two FIRs under the PMLA, the agency said, adding that he was arrested in connection with offence alleged in the last FIR in which former CBI Director A P Singh has also been named.

"I don't think it's right or fair for a political party to comment on an ongoing investigation, which is something that agencies are doing".

'Considering the seriousness of the allegations and to enable the ED to complete thorough investigation, ED custody remand of Moin Akhtar Qureshi for five days, that is till August 31, is granted, ' the court said.

Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate had registered a case of money laundering against Qureshi, whose links with senior CBI officers, were revealed during an investigation carried out by the Income Tax department. Qureshi had, in 2015, also been booked under provisions of PMLA by the ED following an Income Tax prosecution complaint. "He was found involved in hawala transactions through Delhi-based hawala operators".

He had been under probe since 2015 when the ED filed a case against him alleging illegal dealings in foreign exchange and using hawala channels for routing money to London, Dubai and other places. The agency has claimed that Qureshi "extorted" crores of rupees from a businessman in Hyderabad for the "help" provided to him.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated a probe against Qureshi under FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act).

The billionaire meat exporter had first come under the IT scanner in 2011 when for an event hosted in Dubai as part of his daughter Prerna's wedding celebrations, he had flown in famous Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.

Qureshi, a meat exporter from Kanpur, hit headlines in October past year after he was arrested from the Indira Gandhi International Airport.
