Tigers win brawl fest against Yankees Thursday

26 Août 2017

Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera was involved in a fight and ejected during Thursday's game against the New York Yankees at Comerica Park.

Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez crushed his fourth home run of the series in the 4th inning off of Michael Fulmer.

Yankees pitcher Tommy Kahnle was the first player tossed after throwing behind Cabrera.

Gary Sanchez: Four-game suspension for "fighting, including throwing punches". Soon both benches cleared as players joined the fray. Cabrera and Romine were ejected from the game.

In the seventh inning, Yankees reliever Dellin Betances was ejected, along with Yankees bench coach Rob Thompson, after he hit Detroit catcher James McCann in the helmet.

Then David Robertson came in and hit John Hicks with a pitch. Sanchez now faces a lengthy ban, as do a number of others, in a game that saw a total eight ejections and the benches clear three times. Sanchez was suspended four games.

From the Tigers, first baseman Miguel Cabrera (seven games), right-handed reliever Alex Wilson (four games) and manager Brad Ausmus (one game) were suspended. In the case of the last two on the list, their fines stemmed from being on the field while on the disabled list. Tigers' reliever Alex Wilson was suspended four games for admitting he hit NY third baseman Todd Frazier, but in the lower body far away from the head.

Managers are automatically ejected when their team's pitcher throws a retaliatory pitch after warnings have been issued. The conversation quickly escalated as Romine removed his mask and Cabrera got in a shove.

At one point, the ill will carried over to the Detroit dugout, where star pitcher Justin Verlander and teammate Victor Martinez appeared to get into some sort of dispute.

Detroit won the game 10-6, but it seemed the game and outcome were secondary. Unfortunately for Romine, his defense against a possible suspension could fall apart after Major League Baseball sees him punching Miguel Cabrera after he gets back on his feet after the brawl started.

Both teams racked up so many because the bitterness didn't end with the sixth inning brawl - nor did the risky pitches.
