26 Août 2017

The BC Wildfire Service estimated that the fire had grown to an estimated 400 hectares by Friday afternoon.

Emergency Operations says the status of the evacuation order will be reviewed this morning.

"Thankfully with the exception for one fire near the Joe Rich area (east of Kelowna) most of those fires were contained at a very small size and haven't materialized to anything of concern". By the time he called for help, it was already racing through grass and bush into a heavily treed area.

Cynthia Row said she was running on trails through the hills above Highway 33 when flames began shooting up trees around her, blocking the path and forcing her to bushwhack downhill toward the highway.

While there were unconfirmed reports Thursday some structures had been lost, Kelowna Fire Chief Travis Whiting says this is not the case, and no homes are now in immediate risk.

Salmon Arm Fire Chief Brad Shirley says he was told Thursday night by someone completely unconnected to the fire service, that the storm that rocked through Salmon Arm spawned a lightning strike on the east side of the mountain, near where a small plane crashed previous year.

Norm Parks of the Transportation Ministry said Highway 33 remained closed Friday and local detour routes have been established.

Evacuee Stephanie Appel had no choice but to grab what she could and quickly get out, as fire closed in on the community of Joe Rich.

"I've never been this scared in my life".

"I'm very lucky I got out".

The Philpott Road-Highway 33 fire is one of about 30 that were sparked over a 24-hour period, the service said. Most were linked to lightning that moved through the Interior.

The BC Wildfire Service said the fire was probably caused by human activity.

"Yesterday afternoon, and well into the evening, we had grounds crews out there to construct a guard", Hunse said. There were approximately 30 people on site, including firefighters, contract crews and support staff, and additional firefighters were expected to be brought in later in the day. Cool overnight conditions and minimal wind kept the fire from progressing.

Firefighters continue to battle a wildfire that broke out east of Kelowna late yesterday and quickly grew to almost 400 hectares.

On a Facebook post, several other residents of Philpott Road said police allowed them to retrieve horses, dogs and other animals that are stranded near the blaze.

A decision on the possible opening of Highway 33 is expected later this morning.

Properties east of Greystokes Road must evacuate via McCulloch Road.

An Emergency Support Services reception centre is being set up at Willow Park Church.

The next update isn't expected to be ready until around 8:30 a.m.
