Centurion Ben Stokes and record-equalling captain Joe Root took advantage of dismal West Indian catching but England were still dismissed for 258 on day one of the second Investec Test thanks to a bowling display of pace, pride and goal.
Joe Root's England lineup is in control of the three-match series after beating West Indies by an innings in the first test last weekend.
This is the third day of this first cricket test match between England and West Indies.
"I see him playing a massive part for us moving forward", Root said, "but it's a great chance for Chris now to come back into the side and show his class like he did previous year".
Every time I've gone back to the seconds, it's just confirmation that I'm hitting it nicely.
Leeds is only 65 miles from Scarborough - aka "Scarbados" - so it was perhaps appropriate that a sun-kissed Headingley was the scene for a pair of Bajans to revive West Indies' hopes on this tour.
"We have got to make sure that our game is the best it can be and we follow up what was a really good win last week", Root said.
"But you never know if it's a good score until the West Indies innings is finished".
Gabriel and new-ball partner Kemar Roach shared eight wickets between them at Headingley, yet their side might have had an even better day but for several dropped catches.
2nd Test of England vs West Indies
England are not quite as cocky now, they've got an terrible lot of work to do just to save this Test match.
As captain Holder, 25, was targeted more than most, particularly after some odd tactical decisions including their delay in taking the new pink ball during the day-night Test.
It was only Kraigg Brathwaite that provided some resistance for the visitor's side.
Stokes was in a belligerent mood throughout the day and was dropped off the bowling of Roach for a second time on 98 as he looked for his century.
Having taken over the captaincy from Alastair Cook at the start of the northern summer, Root's form with the bat has not suffered with the extra responsibility.
But soon afterwards he was caught behind trying to pull off Gabriel. England dominated with the bat in their first match involving a pink ball.
At the other end, Stokes motored on, adding 64 runs with Moeen Ali in 10 overs after tea before Moeen was caught slashing to cover.
England, despite wicket-keeper Shane Dowrich dropping a sitter, lost their last three wickets on 258.
Brathwaite came out on the right side of a third referral when England fancied him caught behind off Moeen and he timed his run to three figures perfectly, launching Tom Westley's fifth ball in worldwide cricket - and the penultimate one before tea - into the stands.
