Pakistan qualify for FIH tourney in India

Former hockey powerhouse Pakistan qualified for a major tournament after a gap of six years when they made the cut for the men's World Cup 2018, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) announced on Thursday.

Under FIH regulations, the team that wins its continental qualifier automatically qualifies for the World Cup.

Even after a disastrous spell at the 2017 Hockey World League, Pakistan have somehow bagged themselves a place in the 2018 World Cup.

The Green Shirts, now ranked 14th in the FIH Hero World Rankings, finished in seventh position in the Hero Hockey World League Semi-Final in London.

According to the rules of Fédération Internationale de Hockey (International Hockey Federation/FIH), the place in World Cup goes to the team with highest-ranked finish in the Hockey World League semifinals without having already securing the spot, which in this case are Pakistan.

Pakistan becomes the 13th team to qualify for next year's global event, joining host nation India, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, Germany, Ireland, Malaysia, Netherlands, Spain, and New Zealand.

Pakistan has a tremendous record in World Cup, winning four times in 1971, 1978, 1982, and 1994 - more than any other nation. This competition, which is held over the span of two years, serves as a qualifier for the Olympic Games and the Hockey World Cup.
