Forrest eyeing a Real date with destiny in group draw

24 Août 2017

After delivering an incredible performance in last week's first leg tie, Celtic are all but assured of a place in the Champions League group stages ahead of Tuesday's trip to take on Astana in Kazakhstan.

Scottish champions Celtic lead Pot Four and they're joined by CSKA Moscow, Sporting Lisbon, APOEL, Feyenoord, Maribor, Qarabag and RB Leipzig. However, with the criteria regarding that pot having changed (i.e. reserved for champions) then it presents a very strong second pot also.

Pot 1 comprises of the current holders (Real Madrid) and the champions of the other top eight leagues in Europe based on Uefa's coefficient rankings.

Pot two has Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.

Astana have little but pride to play for, but Stoilov's side will be desperate to offer up a better account of themselves than they managed in Glasgow last week. dabblebet offer 7/4 (2.75) that the Kazakh outfit salvage some pride by winning the second leg, with 23/10 (3.30) that the match remains level at the end of 90 minutes.

Back in the day, being a first seed meant that a team was nearly guaranteed to be stronger than everyone in the pots below.

Spartak Moscow and Shakhtar Donetsk are, with the greatest of respect, the first seeds that everyone wants to face in the group stage, as the further travel would be offset by the lower standard in opposition.

After facing Barcelona, Manchester City and Borussia Monchengladbach previous year, Celtic fans will be hoping for a kinder group this time around.

Basket 3: SSC Napoli (Italy), Tottenham (England), Basel (Switzerland), Olympiakos (Greece), Anderlecht (Belgium), Liverpool (England), Roma (Italy), Besiktas (Turkey).

One year ago, Monaco were a risky outlier in pot four because they had few Uefa ranking points from the five previous seasons in the Champions League and Europa League.

For now, each team in the draw will again get just a basic fee of €12.7 million (HK$117.29 million) from Uefa. Each group can only contain one team from the same association.

All the teams would be keen to avoid the heavyweights of the Champions League including, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus.
