On Wednesday, the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford, continued a visit to China following talks the day before with his Chinese counterpart that touched on North Korea.
Dunford Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, signs the Joint Staff Dialogue Mechanism with his Chinese counterpart Gen. Fang Fenghui following a roundtable discussion at the Ba Yi, Aug. 15, 2017. But he said a US -led campaign of economic pressure and diplomacy needs to be backed by potential military consequences.
"And to the American people, to remind them of the values for which we stand in the USA military, which are reflective of the values of the United States", he said.
Dunford says: "As long as the threat in North Korea exists we need to maintain a high state of readiness to respond to that threat".
For Dunford, the public statements from service heads are incredibly important. The talks focused on North Korea and other regional security issues.
North Korea has in the past fired missiles and taken other steps in response to USA and South Korean exercises.
Foreign Minister Taro Kono said Japan would strengthen its defense posture in response to the North Korean threat and provide $500 million to help boost maritime security in East Asia, where China has been pursuing extensive maritime claims.
China is the North's only major ally.
"There's no military solution, forget it", Bannon told The American Prospect.

But, he added, "what's unimaginable is allowing KJU (North Korean leader Kim Jong Un) to develop ballistic missiles with a nuclear warhead that can threaten the United States and continue to threaten the region".
"I think we've had a very transparent exchange with our Chinese interlocutors about North Korea as well", Dunford said.
Mr Kim appeared in photos sitting at a table with a large map marked by a straight line between what appeared to be north-eastern North Korea and Guam, and passing over Japan - the missiles' apparent flight route.
