Palm Beach charity cancels fundraiser at Trump's Mar-a-Lago

21 Août 2017

A Florida-based zoo and conservation society has decided not to hold its annual gala at President Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort.

The announcement came a day after another local group, the Palm Beach Preservation Foundation, abandoned Mar-a-Lago. "Given the current environment surrounding Mar-a-Lago", the organization announced via social media, "we have made the decision to move our annual dinner dance".

The Preservation Foundation, which celebrates and protects the architectural and cultural heritage of Palm Beach, planned to host a dance in March at the club, which has always been an oasis for charities and their patrons during Palm Beach's winter charity season.

On Thursday, the American Cancer Society - which has held events at Mar-a-Lago since 2009 - along with the Cleveland Clinic, both announced they were pulling fundraising events scheduled at the club for next year.

The exodus comes after Trump blamed "many sides" for violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virignia.

"The American Red Cross has decided we can not host our annual fundraising event at Mar-a-Lago, as it has increasingly become a source of controversy and pain for many of our volunteers, employees and supporters".

"We have received concerns about this event being at Mar-a-Lago", Judith Mitchell, the Kravis CEO, said in an email to The Palm Beach Post. "It has become increasingly clear that the challenge to those values is outweighing other business considerations", the American Cancer Society wrote in a statement.

According to the Palm Beach Post, Trump's loss is others' gain, as several hotels in Palm Beach County have been contacted by the charities to serve as replacement hosts for the galas.

The zoo said in a statement it didn't want "distractions" to deter from its mission and culture.

"It is critical that the focus of this special night remains on saving species and raising awareness and money for the hundreds of animals, many of them endangered, in our care".

-American Friends of Magen David Adom, a nonprofit that supports Israeli medical services, said it will not host its Celebration of Life gala at Mar-a-Lago.

"Therefore, I am recommending to my board that we move this year's 24th Annual Lady in Red Gala on December 2 - the proceeds of which benefit those very millions of men and women of all persuasions who have fought with courage and sacrifice in defense of America's ideals - from the Mar-A-Lago Club".
