Missy Elliott statue should replace confederate monument petition says

21 Août 2017

American national treasure Missy Elliott was born in Portsmouth in 1971.

"We believe it is time to finally replace the Confederate Monument in Olde Towne Portsmouth, Virginia near the intersection of Court and High streets with a new statue of a true Portsmouth native hero", he wrote.

Coflin plans to hand the petition over to Portsmouth Mayor John L Rowe for consideration.

The petition is a moment of levity in what has been an otherwise contentious battle over symbols of the confederacy since a recent white supremacist rally held in Charlottesville, Virginia. And with all the talk of removing them, he's got a ideal idea for a reaplacement: instead of a Confederate monument, he'd one for Missy Elliot.

While Missy Elliott came from humble beginnings in Portsmouth, "she rose to become a platinum recording artist with over 30-million albums sold". The counter-protester was hit and killed when James Alex Fields, Jr. drove his auto into a crowd of people.

The campaign was launched by Nathan Coflin, a resident of Portsmouth, Virginia and has nearly reached its target of 5,000 signatures. "Together we can put white supremacy down, flip it and reverse it", the petition reads.

But some want the Confederate monument to remain, going so far as to claim that Elliott simply isn't important enough to receive a statue. "Join me in getting City Council to recent this statue in honor of all those in the great City of Portsmouth who work it each and every day".

"I'm not talking to the president now, I'm sorry, after what he said about my child", she told ABC News. In the meantime, many are protesting the removal of the statues, arguing that they're a part of history or cultural heritage. "But the more it got out there and the more exposure it's getting, the more I think it's a real possibility".
