19 Août 2017

Mourners have attended a state funeral of Ruth Pfau, a German physician and nun who earned global acclaim by devoting her life to the eradication of leprosy in Pakistan.

In the resolution, it was proposed that Dr Ruth Pfau may be given state funeral and Ruth Pafu foundation may also be established.

The highest ranking Catholic bishop of the Karachi diocese, Joseph Coutts will preside over the requiem mass of Dr Pfau at Saint Patrick's Cathedral, following which the body will be taken for burial in Gora Qabaristan situated at Shara-e-Faisal.

Dr Pfau, the founder of the National Leprosy Control Programme in Pakistan, was in charge of the Marie Adelaide Society of Pakistan (MASP), where leprosy patients are treated.

We must resign on behalf of America's working people, who reject all notions of legitimacy of these bigoted groups", they said. The statement was jointly issued by Thea Lee, an economist who previously served as deputy chief of staff at the AFL-CIO.

In a statement released on her death, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi praised Pfao for her "selfless and unmatched services for the eradication of leprosy" in his country and that through her years of service, Pfau proved that "humanity knows no boundaries". The Pakistani military is expected to accompany her funeral cortege and there will also be a 21-gun salute in her honor.

Pfau made a decision to stay in Pakistan as a health care worker and her efforts in organizing a proper hospital building for the colony resulted in the creation of the first Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre, in Karachi.

That dedication to heal brought Pfau honors from all over the world, including from Pakistan, her adopted homeland.

The late Dr Ruth had come to Pakistan from Germany in 1960 and was granted Pakistani citizenship in 1988.
