Twitch acquired video indexing platform ClipMine to power new discovery features

Those streams make it easier to learn new things about your favored hero, watch someone likely to make a flashy play, or avoid heroes that are likely to bore you. The options for Hearthstone are a little more expansive, allowing you to filter streams by game mode, player rank, number of wins, and hero class. Similarly, it means gamers who only wish to watch top-notch Hearthstone players now have a filter to weed out other streams that may have been popular, but centered on lower-ranked play.

Metadata of this kind was previously introduced for League of Legends to great success.

In an announcement about a set of new discovery tools, Amazon-owned video game streaming site Twitch also unveiled that it recently acquired Palo Alto-based video indexing platform ClipMine.

Bringing a similar filtering option to "Overwatch" and "Hearthstone" made sense because they were two of Twitch's most popular competitive games, and players often watch others in order to help improve their own skills. But Twitch's streams are live, and don't have as much metadata to index.

The reason for the change stemmed from the desire in many of Twitch's users to improve at their favourite games by watching better players stream them.

Twitch said the Overwatch and Hearthstone directories are based on computer vision and machine learning technologies.
