Mobile apps to facilitate toll RFID tags launched

18 Août 2017

"The cumbersome method of purchase and recharge of FASTags, has been one of the major challenges with our electronic toll collection (ETC) project", NHAI chairman Deepak Kumar said. "In addition, the app can also be used to activate the RFID tags that came built in with around 74 lakh cars in the country following the 2013 Gazette Notification in this regard", the statement said.

From Friday, FASTags can be purchased online from the websites of banks, the National Highways Authority of India and Indian Highways Management Company Limited and it will be delivered at the customer's doorsteps, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in a statement. A consumer can purchase or recharge FASTags on this app, which also helps keep track of transactions and provides for online grievance redressal.

All toll plazas on national highways will have electronic toll collection facility with at least one lane dedicated to vehicles with electronic tag device, known as FASTags, beginning September 1.

"Those who have FASTags can take advantage because all the toll booths will be enabled with a FASTag reader", he said. Work involving integration of RFID readers in all the Toll Plaza lanes is already under progress and is likely to be completed by October 31, 2017. Similarly, FASTag Partner is a merchant app where agencies like Common Services Centre, banks and vehicle dealers can sell and enroll FASTag. The other lanes, though FASTag enabled, can accept other forms of payment too. The government has been taking steps to introduce electronic toll collections for smoother and faster operations at tolls and this should improve things further. From August 18, FASTags can also be bought from Common Services Centre (CSC) points which are to be set up near the toll plazas.
