Eclipse festival traffic clogs highways outside of OR city

18 Août 2017

Transportation departments in Washington state and OR have warned travelers that traffic will most likely be worse than they expect.

The Oregon State Police reported the narrow stretch of road, Highway 26, was backed up as far as 15 miles for eclipse enthusiasts.

An advertisement for a central OR festival built around Monday's total solar eclipse sits alongside a busy road leading into Madras.

A handful of gas stations in Bend and Prineville also ran out of fuel Wednesday before getting restocked. Traffic is already a headache in central OR as thousands of people arrive before the eclipse.

Traffic officials were planning to reprogram traffic lights to provide more time on green lights on east-west routes. The Prineville police also closed the eastbound lane of the highway for a time Thursday and diverted traffic onto local roads so the crush could clear. Gas stations were still stocked, said Joe Krenowicz, executive director of the Jefferson County-Madras Chamber of Commerce. That is because there is just an approximate 60-to-70 mile area of Central Oregon that will be within the eclipse's path of totality. Local officials expect about a million people to travel to SC to view the eclipse, with as many as 700,000 visitors possible in Columbia alone, as reported by Bristow Marchant of The State.
