North Korea leader 'briefed' on Guam missile plan — BBCI

15 Août 2017

Guam's leader on Monday said "sometimes a bully can only be stopped with a punch in the nose", in a spirited defence of President Donald Trump's rhetoric against North Korea which has the island in its crosshairs.

The rogue state has said it plans to fire missiles towards a USA nuclear base in Guam, having developed - U.S. intelligence officials believe - a nuclear warhead small enough to fit inside its missiles.

In this context, Tillerson used the weekend gathering of the ASEAN regional forum, Asia's biggest security group that also includes "outside" nations such as the United States, North Korea and Japan, to try to isolate Pyongyang by "drastically" reducing their dealings with it.

"How often do you see France, China, Russia, the US voting unanimously on any issue?"

"I need a certain amount of ambiguity on this" to prevent North Korea from knowing too much about USA planning, he said.

While Trump's comments have been criticized as incendiary by some political opponents, foreign governments and experts, they have been supported by others.

"If the planned fire of power demonstration is carried out as the U.S.is going more reckless, it will be the most delightful historic moment when the Hwasong artillerymen will wring the windpipes of the Yankees and point daggers at their necks", KCNA reported Kim as saying.

Fears have been heightened by the fact that the North has made rapid progress toward its stated goal of developing a nuclear-tipped missile that could target the US mainland.

Ri told the ASEAN forum that North Korea "will, under no circumstances, put the nukes and ballistic rockets on the negotiating table; neither shall we flinch even an inch from the road to bolstering up the nuclear forces chosen by ourselves".

But UN Secretary General António Guterres hinted that Trump's remarks risked derailing the diplomatic process. We obviously reiterate or welcome that commitment to peaceful diplomatic and political solution to the situation.

Mattis and Tillerson also credited UN efforts and said the United States was willing to negotiate with North Korea, but said Pyongyang should indicate a desire to show good faith by halting weapons and nuclear tests.

Pompeo said the rhetoric from Trump was geared at sending a message to North Korea and letting the isolated nation know that the U.S. policy of "strategic patience" had come to an end.

The DPRK leader threatened to carry out the operational plan against Guam and warned the US that it should "think reasonably and judge properly".

In order to resolve the tensions between the DPRK and United States, he insisted that the latter should make "necessary" actions "first" as it committed provocations after introducing huge nuclear strategic equipment into the vicinity of the Korean peninsula, the same report stated. But they also warned he left the door open to launch a missile if he feels provoked.

"I was admonishing the journalist or the fake news complex that are forcing our chief diplomat into a position where they're demanding he makes the military case for action when that is not the mandate of the secretary of state", Gorka added.
