Analysis: Trump turns to Russia probe to poke at his critics

Remember that Starr took over the Whitewater investigation, an examination into an Arkansas land deal gone bad, in 1994.

THOMAS DUPREE JR: Good morning.

Marcus Hutchins, a young British researcher credited with having derailed a global cyberattack in May, has been arrested for allegedly creating and distributing malicious software designed to collect banking passwords.

But he has been forced to acknowledge that his eldest son, Donald Jr, his son-in-law Jared Kushner and his then campaign advisor Paul Manafort did meet a Kremlin-connected lawyer to get dirt on Hillary Clinton. They give a prosecutor many additional tools that he or she can use to get witness testimony, to obtain documents. Gun maker Sturm Ruger says its sales dropped 21% last quarter, while Cabela's, which sells guns and outdoor products, has seen store sales fall 10%. It could well lead to criminal indictments.

He added: "The question for Democrats - all Democrats, including those in Congress - is whether they are on the side of the voters or are they on the side of the special interests".

A grand jury is a group of ordinary citizens who, working behind closed doors, considers evidence brought to them by prosecutors, to decide whether there is sufficient suspicions of criminal wrongdoing to bring charges. "It turned into the Monica Lewinsky investigation, which then turned into the second impeachment trial in history".

MARTIN: You've been responsible for managing several significant government cases on behalf of various agencies and the White House. The complaint alleges that Harvard has discriminated against Asian-Americans in its admissions policies. I decided to take the meeting. However, in some practical and political ways the grand jury is a key milestone.

If called to testify before a grand jury, Trump would not be the first president to do so.

SHAPIRO: So if this grand jury is a sign that the investigation is expanding, ongoing, another sign comes in Mueller's hiring practices, which you also report on in the story today. Mueller has impaneled a grand jury here in Washington.

Shortly after a Sheriff's unit arrived on scene the male subject fired another shot towards the officer's direction. The CHP officers and Caltrans workers were confronted by Brown who had come out of a residence in the area.

Now, you could - if you were just investigating Michael Flynn, you would continue probably using that same grand jury, right?

Conway says Trump believes the Russia investigation is a "complete false and fabricated lie". "There never were. We didn't win because of Russia, we won because of you, that I can tell you".

"Ensuring that the special counsel cannot be removed improperly is critical to the integrity of his investigation", Coons said.

"They don't talk about the all-time high stock market". No wonder he is trying to smear and discredit him.

"I think he will be troubled".

Zelizer said the reliance on base politics carries risks for Trump, who has already sustained cracks in his support, embodied by strained relations with Republican leadership, Arizona Republican Sen. Mueller, who was Comey's predecessor as FBI director, has assembled a team of prosecutors and lawyers with experience in financial fraud, national security and organized crime to investigate contacts between Moscow and the Trump campaign.

Speaking on ABC's "This Week", Conway says the White House has made clear it will cooperate with Mueller's investigation into possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Given all of that, for Starr to suggest that Mueller may be out over his skis is ironic.

Scarborough replied, "I think actually, write it down children". He claims he pressed Vladimir Putin on the issue when the two spoke for more than two hours at the G20 in Hamburg in July.
