Mr Calvo, meanwhile, responded: "I have never felt more safe or so confident with you at the helm". "I wanted to call you and say hello, how are you?"

On Friday, Trump himself had yet another warning for North Korea, which has threatened to launch attacks on Guam, where several USA military assets are located.

"Eddie, I have to tell you, you've become extremely famous", said the president, who telephoned from Bedminster, New Jersey, where's he on a working vacation.

The president also predicted a boom in tourism for the US territory in light of the North Korean threat.

"It's paradise", Calvo said.

"Do not look at the flash or fireball - It can blind you", it said. You are safe. We're with you 1,000 percent. "And if anything happens to Guam, there's going to be big, big trouble in North Korea".

The Government has instructed residents to be proactive and create emergency supply kits, a family emergency plan and a list of concrete shelters in their vicinity.

Xi's call came hours after Trump warned North Korea that the USA military is "locked and loaded", and as the Pentagon said the United States and South Korea plan to proceed with a joint military exercise in 10 days.

In a recorded phone call to Guam Gov. Eddie Calvo, the president tried to reassure the residents of the island, saying, "We are with you 1000 percent...." They should have had me eight years ago, somebody with my thought process, because that was the time.

North Korea says its Hwasong-12 missiles would take just 1,065 seconds to complete their 3,356km flight over Japan before splashing down in waters off the coast of Guam. "You are safe", Trump told Calvo at the outset of the call, which appeared to last about three minutes, according to the video.

The president called the United States military "incredible, "rock solid" and "the best in the world by a factor of five".

Tension in the region has risen since North Korea carried out two nuclear bomb tests past year and two intercontinental ballistic missile tests in July.

Mr. Trump had threatened to rain "fire and fury" on North Korea for any provocation.
